The wool shawl comes off the loom in Pavlovo Posad, thick and honest, its roses set down by a painter’s hand, not a machine. In our shop a craftsman lays that shawl beside cold northern fur - shadow fox, deep raccoon - then works slow, sure strokes with his shears. He stitches wool to pelt until the two ride together, new as dawn, tough as the Siberian road.
